Testing a Budget Lift Kit for the Hilux: A Practical Solution for Heavy-Duty Deliveries

Introduction:

In today's challenging economic climate, where financial constraints are felt by many, finding cost-effective solutions becomes increasingly important. This reality holds true for individuals and businesses alike, as tighter budgets call for prudent spending. In light of rising interest rates and rent prices, we decided to explore a budget lift kit for our delivery ute. With a constant heavy load of up to 1000kgs daily, (consisting of multiple 200+ kilo loads) our vehicle was in dire need of a suspension upgrade. This article shares our experience with fitting a budget lift kit to our Hilux and assesses its performance.

The Decision to Try a Budget Lift Kit:

Recognising the urgent requirement for a suspension upgrade, we sought advice from one of our trusted wholesalers. They suggested trying a budget lift kit as a cost-effective alternative to renowned brands such as Dobinsons or Tough Dog shocks. Intrigued by the possibility of saving money without compromising quality, we decided to give it a go.

The Contents of the Kit:

The budget lift kit we opted for consisted of 4 x Webco Big Bore shocks, coupled with a pair of Kings coil springs and Auforce leaf springs. Given the consistently heavy load our delivery ute carries, we chose the constant load leafs, although there is another option available for lighter loads (0-250kgs). The kit was comprehensive, including all the necessary components for installation.

Assessment of Quality and Performance:

While it is essential to note that the budget lift kit does not boast the same level of prestige as higher-end brands, its overall quality seemed satisfactory considering the price point. Although the shocks may not match the durability and performance of Dobinsons or Tough Dog shocks, we were willing to compromise in favor of saving some money.

Installation and Lift Performance:

Upon completing the installation, we were pleased to discover that the kit provided a genuine 50mm lift, meeting our expectations. The rear end, in particular, demonstrated commendable performance. Despite the weight of the bull bar, winch, and heavy rear load, the kit effectively smoothed out the ride. Its rigidity compensated for the additional load, ensuring a stable and controlled driving experience.

Conclusion:

The Front struts were also assembled which made life so much easier for our fitters, including all guys out there if you were to purchase one of these kits.
